It’s been a long wait, but we’re finally ready to share some details about The Big Library Move coming later this summer!

A lot of things happened between leaving the library on Beckwith Street in October, and our current status still at the Station on Coleman Street. COVID restrictions, building supply problems, and construction issues extended our return date from February 2021 to later this summer. But what renovation ever goes smoothly?

We had a great idea, though, and YOU’RE going to love it! Instead of closing for several weeks while we move back to the library, we’re going to keep the Station open throughout the move and only close for a short week sometime in August. (We’ll let you know when we know the dates!) Isn’t that great?

That means no matter how long it takes us to move back in and get set up, YOU won’t have any interruptions in service. You’ll still be able to get materials, even while we’re moving. Sure, we might close for a week in mid-late August to move the rest of our books over to Beckwith Street, but it will be a very quick process compared to all of the extended move plans we had earlier this year. You’ll hardly even notice. We’ll make sure you have everything you need for that week!

How will it all work? We’ll answer ALL of your pressing questions and more in the coming weeks, but for now, here are a few key things you need to know now:

  • We’ve just put out a call for volunteers. If you can help, please fill out this form to register.
  • We will be continuing curbside pickup, but as of June 30 you are also welcome back inside the Station to choose your own books. We’re looking forward to seeing you again!
  • You will still be able to access all of our online resources like Libby and Hoopla no matter where we are this summer, so why not give those a try now? This is a great time to get help setting it up if you need it.

If you’re looking for a fun way to start using the library again, we’re kicking off our Summer Reading programs for children, teens, and adults on July 2nd! You can find out more below on how to register.

FAQ

How long can I have the books I take out now?

Books taken out now will be due back in August. We’re not charging any fines until we’re fully open again at the Library on Beckwith Street, so you don’t have to worry about a thing!

Can I return books before you move?
Yes, you can! We’d love it if you kept the books until we make our move back to Beckwith Street, but we know that might not be possible. Please feel free to drop any returns in our blue box outside the Station.

When are you going to reopen on Beckwith Street?
That’s the BIG question. The answer is–we just don’t know. It’s going to take a while to get all of the books that have been in storage and at the Station back on the shelves. We’ll also need to figure out the new furniture arrangements, room setups, and storage needs. Once we have things in place enough to keep everyone safe and provide good library service, we’ll reopen to the public. We’re aiming for an August reopening–if everything comes together as planned.

For now, we’re looking forward to seeing you again at the Station. It’s going to be an exciting summer!
