Carleton Place Public Library

Tech Tutoring

The Carleton Place Public Library offers tech tutoring appointments on-site on most Thursdays all year.

Tech tutoring appointments last 30-minuites and consist of 1-on-1 assistance with our programming coordinator, Julia, who can help with basic issues on various devices including laptops, iPads, tablets, smart phones, or smart watches.

You can make a tech tutoring appointment at the front desk of the library, either in-person or over the phone – 613-257-2702.

E-Books and E-Audiobooks at CPPL

There are many ways you can access e-books and e-audiobooks through your library – primarily through our library resource apps: Libby & Hoopla.

Information About Libby

Libby is a fantastic e-book and e-audiobook resource that you can access on your computer, phone, tablets, or kobo e-reading device!

Click over to getting starts, tips & tricks, or troubleshooting to find out more about libby!

To get started with Libby, you’ll want to:
  • If you’re using a tablet of phone: download the Libby app through the app store, or play store!
  • If you’re using your computer: visit www.libby.com
  • Follow the prompts to connect with your library (to find the correct library, search Carleton Place Public Library, we’re in the Ontario Library Consortium group!)
  • Add your Library Card info to connect to your account!
    • Your library card number (aka your username) can be found at the bottom of your library card – do not inlcude any spaces!
    • Your PIN was set when you signed up for a library card – it may be the last 4 digits of your phone number.
      • If you can’t figure out what your PIN is, you can ask at the front desk of the library to find out.
Borrowing a Title
  • Once you find a book/audiobook you wish to borrow, click on the ‘Borrow’ button next to the title.
  • Confirm the borrowing period (usually 14 days) according to your preference.
  • The title will be automatically added to your ‘Shelf’.

Return or Renew your title
  • Titles are automatically returned when the lending period expires.
  • To return a book early, go to the ‘Shelf’, tap ‘Manage Loan’, and select ‘Return Early’.
  • To renew, you will see an option appear several days before the lending period ends, depending on the title’s availability.

Downloading a Title
  • Once you’ve borrowed a book, and have opened it, it should be automatically downloaded to your device

Holds
  • If a title is currently not available, you can place a hold. You’ll be notified when it’s your turn to borrow.
  • You can review the items you have on hold on your ‘holds’ shelf in your shelves tab
  • You can suspend a hold that becomes available

Customizing Your Reading Experience
  • When you open a book, there should be a large ‘A’ in the top right side of your screen
  • If you tap on that ‘A’ you should be able to change the text scale
    • Under ‘Text Scale’ there’s a switch that lets you turn on accessibility sizes. If you like to read large print books, switch this on to access similar sizes!
  • You can also switch the lighting (light, dark, or sephia), or toggel the book design to use different fonts, such as OpenDyslexic!

If you are having trouble with your libby account, we suggest trying the following steps:

  1. Close the app/page and restart your device
  2. Ensure that you have internet access and adequet storage on your device
  3. Check that your library card hasn’t expired
  4. Remove your library card, and then add it back to your account
